Music Corner by Lynn (Linzmeier) Stubbe
So many of my camp memories involve music. I can't think about an Edwards campfire without thinking of Kurt Sample leading us in song as he strummed his guitar. Kurt not only exposed me to songs I had not heard before - The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald stands out - he also taught his staff, myself included, how to lead a song. He's a pro at modeling how to teach the chorus and then give the next line, at just the right time, so everyone around the fire can join in. The folk songs Kurt played around the campfire still have an impact on my musical choices today.
Other core music based memories include:
*The annual staff mixtape
*A first listen to Depeche Mode with Heather Swallow
*Jane Says on repeat in the staff lounge
*Daily renditions of The Siesta Song and the G-Swim Mambo
*Memorizing all of the Jimmy Buffet songs I possibly could before going with Kris(ty) Magiera to see him in Alpine Valley
*Working Fall String Along weekends
*The extended version of Rise and Shine around the flagpole, led by Lisa Koenecke, when breakfast was running a little late
Here's a run down of the Stubbe family's favorite camp songs:
Doug (Staff 86-88 & 91 NBZ: 90's) Let's Build a Bungalow and Magic Penny,
Kurt leading Where Have All the Flowers Gone With his LITs: Green Acres
Lynn (Staff 89-91 NBZ: 00's) Linger leading into The Vesper Hymn
Synclare (Family Camp & Staff at YMCA Camp St. Croix) The Princess Pat and I'm Being Eaten By a Boa Constrictor
Kerik (Family Camp & Staff 20-21) Boom Chicka Boom
Many Sunday dinners are spent listening to Simply Folk on Wisconsin Public Radio. It's amazing how a playlist can transport us back to those magical evenings spent around an Edwards campfire.

Mottos that Guide Us
Camp has some saying that stick with us forever.
Whether you were a little kid and you thought mosquitoes were actually 7 feet tall or were a crying camper repeating “see you next summer” the week after as you want to return to camp, there are words that echo in our head.
As a senior master camper, most of us have had the chance to be a sponsor for the Purple ceremony, and just like your sponsor had relayed words of wisdom onto you, all you wanted was to influence our sponsee with your own words. Well I want you all to take a moment as we head into the winter, and think about what phrase, saying, part of a song, or little sign said that makes you think of camp. Think about the moment you saw it and the memory associated with that saying.
Some people have told me that they think about the song Linger when they hear “This is goodnight and not goodbye” or one of the sayings in Micklewright that says “Ships don’t come in, they’re brought in”. And the classic one that I always think of “Dream big dreams and put on your overalls”.
Please write in the comment section your favorite saying and a memory associated with that little saying.
